SRK launches documentary on Mughal-E-Azam

Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan recently launched a documentary for the Hindi magnum opus, Mughal-E-Azam. The documentary is a tribute by Akbar Asif, son of K. Asif who was the maker of the epic drama. Shah Rukh Khan decided to produce this documentary after meeting Akbar Asif in London, who wanted to pay a tribute to his father. SRK says, “I was moved by the passion with which the family spoke about their father’s classic… not to forget their perseverance in fulfilling his dream of releasing Mughal-E-Azam in colour. Akbar mentioned that last year was the film’s 50th anniversary and that he wanted to pay a tribute to his father which propelled Shahrukh into becoming the producer for the documentary.

Praising the brilliant film that it was, Shah Rukh said that Mughal-E-Azam, which was a portrayal of the love story between Salim and Anarkali was an eternal film of all times in Bollywood. He particularly expressed his fondness for the dialogue mouthed by Prithiviraj Kapoor (who played Akbar), “Salim tumhe marne nahi dega aur hum tumhe jeene nahi denge, Anarkali.” SRK also said that Mughal-E-Azam was the mother of all films and joked that mothers cannot be remade.

Speaking of the personal connection he had with the film, Shah Rukh reminisced, “My dad was chosen to play the role of a Pathan, but Asif saab ousted him as he performed badly. Eventually Ajit saab played that part. When I was young, my father would tell me that Asif saab told him to go back home and give birth to an actor,” smiles Khan. He went on to say that when he faces obstacles while producing movies, he thinks of Mughal-E-Azam, which overcame all odds. Appreciating the spirit of the film maker and the actors Shah Rukh made no qualms in admitting that it was impossible to recreate the originality and passion of all involved in the making of the film. The actor also spoke highly of Dilip Kumar who essayed the role of Salim in the film and went on to add that an actor of his stature would continue to influence not only actors but also Indian cinema as a whole.
